What to Expect at Your Child’s First Gymnastics Competition

6 min read

If your child is gearing up for their first Gymfinity Kids recreational gymnastics competition, you might be wondering what to expect. Competitions can be an exciting milestone for young gymnasts, offering them the chance to showcase their skills, build confidence, and have fun.

Whether your child is just starting their gymnastics journey or aiming to progress, this guide will help you and your little gymnast prepare for the big day!

1. Understanding Gymfinity Kids Competitions

Gymfinity Kids offers fun and friendly recreational gymnastics competitions designed to encourage children of all abilities. Unlike elite gymnastics competitions, these events focus on participation, skill progression, and personal achievement.

Each child will have the opportunity to perform routines in a supportive environment, with judges assessing their performance based on technique, execution, and confidence.

2. What Events Will Your Child Compete In?

The children will show off their skills across various events. Our recreational gymnastics competitions normally focus on three main pieces on the gym floor:

  • Vault: Gymnasts sprint and jump onto a vaulting table, showcasing strength and technique.
  • Trampette: Gymnasts get loads of extra spring from this piece of equipment which helps them to demonstrate shapes and skills whilst soaring through the air
  • Floor: A routine incorporating jumps, rolls, and basic tumbling skills

The routines will always depend on your child’s skill level, but our competitions are tailored to suit every level of gymnasts, ensuring that every child has a chance to shine.

We usually split out gymnastics and ninja competitions by age and skill level, for example, the 2025 Easter Competition is for Beginner Gymnasts (all ages) and Ninjas aged 4 – 6 years, and the 2025 Spring Competitions is for Intermediate/Advanced Gymnasts (all ages) and Ninjas aged 7+ years.

However, we host ‘all levels’ competitions regularly. These ‘all levels’ competitions are open to all children above the age of 4 years, regardless of their level.

3. What to Expect on Competition Day

In the lead-up to competitions, we run training sessions and workshops for children to learn and practice routines. These additional sessions give children the opportunity to hone their skills and routines in preparation for the big competition day.

Arrival and Warm-Up

Once we have all the competition entries in, we contact all parents about their entry time so you will know what time to arrive for your child’s competition time slot.

On competition day, it’s best to arrive early to allow time for registration and warm-ups. Your child’s coach will guide them through stretching and light exercises to prepare them for their routines. This is also a great time for parents to find a good viewing spot and offer words of encouragement.

Performance and Judging

Each gymnast will take turns performing their routines in front of a judging panel. Judges assess performances based on execution, technique, and confidence rather than high-level difficulty. Scores are given to help gymnasts track their progress rather than create a competitive atmosphere. We know performing in front of an audience can be daunting so our friendly coaches are always available to help if needed.

Awards and Recognition

Gymfinity Kids competitions focus on participation and achieving your personal best meaning every child is recognised for their efforts. Certificates and a small gift are often awarded for participation, with medals for those who place in the top three spots. We like to keep our competition groups small so we can make every gymnast feel like a champion!

Our coaches also look for children displaying any of the Gymfinity Kids core values and reward them with stickers and/or medals. We love to recognise and applaud those who go above and beyond in our clubs. We are committed to making Gymfinity Kids a rewarding place for your child to learn, grow, and thrive!

4. How to Prepare Your Child

Practice, but keep it fun!

Encourage your child to practice their routines at home while keeping it enjoyable – we recommend showing the routine to family and friends to really help create that competition experience of performing in front of an audience. Light stretching, balancing exercises, and basic gymnastic drills from their routine can also help to build their confidence.

Pack the essentials

Ensure your child’s competition bag includes:

  • Water bottle to stay hydrated
  • Healthy snacks for energy
  • Hair ties and clips to keep hair neat
  • A positive mindset!

Discuss expectations

Help your child understand that the goal is to do their best and have fun. Emphasise effort and personal growth over scores, so they enjoy the experience without pressure.

5. Supporting Your Child on the Day

As a parent or guardian accompanying your child to the competition, your role is to offer encouragement and reassurance. Here’s how you can help:

  • Stay positive and enthusiastic – your energy will reflect on your child.
  • Remind them that it’s okay to make mistakes; every gymnast learns and improves over time.

6. Why Gymfinity Kids Competitions Are a Great Experience

Participating in a Gymfinity Kids gymnastics competition is about more than just medals. It teaches valuable life skills such as discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Children build friendships, gain self-confidence, and develop a love for gymnastics in a supportive, non-pressurised environment.

We can’t wait to see you at the next competition!

If your child is due to take part in their first Gymfinity Kids gymnastics competition, get ready for a day full of excitement, achievement, and fun! With a little preparation and a positive mindset, they’ll walk away feeling proud of their efforts.
